Barriers to BNPL: How are FSIs overcoming key challenges in delivering BNPL and embedded finance through use of APIs?

City Social, Tower 42, 25 Old Broad St, London EC2N 1HQ

The explosive growth of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) is transforming the payments, financial services, and retail industries at breakneck speed, with customers now expecting seamless and personalised services at the touch of a button wherever and however they want to pay.

And while new payments players continue to thrive in a world of APIs and PSD2-enabled technology, incumbent financial services institutions are facing challenges to implement the infrastructure and real-time data flows needed to create the next generation of payments offerings as well as prepare for the evolution of Open Banking and embedded finance.

At the same time, FSIs are under pressure to roll these services out in a way which is fast and secure, both for them and their customers, or risk major reputational and financial damage, all the while working within the confines of ever stricter regulation and essential KYC, credit risk and onboarding checks.

As a result, many FSIs are exploring the potential of low-code platforms which enable the shift to composable and API-enabled services and Open Finance without the need for wide-ranging technology and skills transformation.

This roundtable with industry peers will explore key challenges in the journey to delivering APIs for BNPL and a range of new Open Finance and embedded finance services and examine some of the advantages of a low-code approach in rolling these out to market as fast as the FinTech challengers.

Topics for discussion:

  • How are FSIs responding to consumer demand for Open Banking, embedded finance, and other API-enabled services?
  • How advanced are FSIs in rolling out APIs for BNPL and other embedded finance services?
  • How are FSIs overcoming the challenges of delivering different kinds of API and what role can low-code platforms play in accelerating the delivery of APIs and new applications?
  • What role is the regulator likely to play in the future of BNPL services?
  • BNPL is coming under increasing criticism over consumer impact. How can FSIs and merchants use alternative payments as a force for good and to help customers?
