Data Innovation Dilemmas: How can FSIs Accelerate Development of Digital Services While Keeping Customer Data Safe?

Digital transformation and migrating existing workloads to the cloud while refactoring applications to cloud native methods already posed an intimidating set of challenges for FSIs, particularly while working within the confines of regulations such as GDPR and MIFID II.

But data security and privacy concerns are threatening to slow or even derail the progress many FSIs are making in their efforts to free themselves from legacy technology. In an age of remote working, reports of high-profile data breaches multiply as the insider threat increases and the cybercriminals become ever more sophisticated. This leaves senior leaders uneasy about the risks – both reputational and financial – involved in transferring sensitive customer data to new platforms under the watchful eye of the regulators. 

At the same time, rapidly changing customer expectations mean that FSIs are under pressure to recruit data scientists develop, scale and roll out the next generation of AI-driven digital products and services, or risk losing market share to digital challengers.

Faced with this dilemma, FSIs must strike a careful balance between ensuring that developers and staff have access to the data they need whilst ensuring it does not fall into the wrong hands.  As result, many companies are looking to incorporate data security earlier in their development lifecycle as part of a DevSecOps approach.
