As the economy becomes ever more digitised, financial services providers are rushing to control the vast data flows needed to power their operations, with many looking to cloud data transformation as a solution. However, as the shift to cloud accelerates, many are finding that the costs of settling on a strategy or provider that does not work for their organisation can be extremely high.

Though FSIs are unlikely to have any issues finding cloud vendors willing to take their data, challenges can arise down the line, including data privacy, vendor lock-in, data portability issues and the impact on time-to-market. This means that IaaS cost is just one consideration when it comes to assessing the risk around an organisation’s cloud data strategy.

At the same time the adoption of technologies like containers and microservices are making significant changes to way FSIs develop, launch and scale applications as demand for digital services grows during the pandemic. As a result, IT leaders are under renewed pressure to speed up transformation projects in order to keep up with the competition, which can lead to snap decisions which prove problematic in the long term.
