Barclays launches contactless payments service

Barclays has announced that it will be introducing its own contactless payment service for NFC-enabled Android mobiles, giving users the option to make contactless payments at any of the 400,000 contactless locations in the UK and across the London transport network.

‘Contactless Mobile’ sees Barclays become the first UK bank to offer its own, integrated service for both debit and credit cards on Android phones, building upon the initial functionality launched by the bank earlier this year.

The service will be available via the Barclays mobile banking app, where eligible debit and credit cards will appear automatically, with no requirement to enter card details. For payments up to £30, users must tap their mobile device on the terminal, and enter a PIN or verify with a fingerprint. The service also allows contactless payments between £30 and £100, which requires entering the card’s normal PIN on the phone keypad.

The Barclays mobile app is currently used by five million customers who access the app 27 times per month on average. Integrating Contactless Mobile within the app also means customers will be able to view their contactless mobile transactions alongside other account transactions.

The service is due for release in June, and will be phased in over a number of days, with customers receiving a message from Barclays once it becomes available.

Ashok Vaswani, CEO of Barclays UK, noted: “Giving customers the choice about how to make everyday payments while making it really easy for people to use our services is why we’ve designed this new contactless payment functionality which will sit at the heart of our already popular mobile banking app. It’s all there, in one place, ready to go with no need to enter card details, delivering a brilliant experience in an instant.”
