App payments hit £4bn at Barclays

Barclays’ smartphone apps processed £4 billion worth of transactions in August, the bank has revealed.

This equated to £90,000 a minute and £1,500 every second. The latest figures also showed that the average Barclays customer now visited a branch less than twice a month, but used mobile banking 26 times a month.

Since the Barclays mobile banking and Pingit apps were launched in 2012, they have been downloaded more than 5 million times, and are being accessed 17.5 million times each week, or every 29 seconds.

The bank said that while both of its apps had undergone robust safety testing, consumers also had a play a part in protecting their accounts when using digital banking. It reminded customers to keep PIN number and log-in details safe, log out of their accounts, and use updated antivirus software.

Alex Grant, managing director of fraud prevention at Barclays, said that its mobile banking and Pingit apps had become the first in the UK to be awarded the new BSI (British Standards Institution) kitemark for secure digital transactions.

“Millions of Barclays customers use digital banking every day and its popularity is in part due to the robust safety measures we have in place across those channels,” noted Grant.

“Having our security systems independently and rigorously tested to achieve the BSI kitemark clearly demonstrates our continued commitment to safeguard our customers’ finances and data.”
