Alipay integrates payment option in AR glasses

Alipay has introduced a new payment capability that allows users to complete transactions using augmented reality (AR) glasses, aiming to enhance the speed and intuitiveness of digital payments.

The technology enables users to scan a merchant’s Alipay QR code through AR glasses and confirm the transaction via voice verification. This method significantly reduces the time typically required for QR code payments via smartphone, which can take 20 to 30 seconds.

Alipay described the innovation as a step towards a seamless “look-to-pay” experience. The company stated that future iterations could support gesture-based payments and interactive product discovery, further integrating the digital and physical shopping environments.

Looking ahead, the platform expects AR glasses to evolve in a way that allows users to initiate payments by simply looking at or pointing to products. This development could connect in-store browsing with online retail capabilities, offering new levels of convenience and engagement.

The AR integration was developed in collaboration with [Rokid](https://www.rokid.ai/), a Chinese company specialising in augmented reality and human-computer interaction. Rokid’s founder and chief executive Zhu Mingming noted that embedding payment functionality in AR glasses represents a milestone in creating intuitive, AI-powered shopping experiences.

"Behind this innovation is close collaboration with Alipay on both payment and risk technologies. Looking ahead, we will continue to explore new experiences together," he said.

He added that such technologies could also facilitate product discovery by providing real-time information, virtual trials, or personalised recommendations, enhancing the overall consumer experience.

The rollout reflects a broader trend in the payments sector, where emerging technologies such as AR, artificial intelligence, and biometric authentication are being leveraged to deliver faster, more secure and more personalised consumer experiences. With mobile wallets already mainstream in many markets, providers are increasingly focused on embedding payment capabilities into new form factors, from wearables to voice assistants, as part of a shift toward ambient and frictionless commerce.
