Apple Pay launches in India with Axis Bank

Apple has launched Apple Pay in India, allowing customers in the country to make contactless payments using their iPhone, iPad and Apple watch.

The service is now available for customers with eligible Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards and will be rolled out to Mac devices soon. Customers can add eligible cards through the Axis Bank app or directly through the Apple Wallet app.

Apple said the launch forms part of its continued expansion of Apple Pay, which is currently available in more than 90 countries and regions.

The company said customers can use Apple Pay to make payments in shops, through apps, and online without entering their card details each time. In stores, users can pay by holding their device near a contactless payment terminal and authenticating the transaction using Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode.

Apple Pay will be accepted at a range of merchants in India, including Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Croma, Ixigo, Tata 1mg and Zomato. Apple has also partnered with payment service providers including BillDesk, Cashfree, Juspay, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs and Razorpay to support the rollout.

The company said more merchants and additional support will be introduced over time.

“India is home to a dynamic and digitally savvy population that continues to embrace a cashless future while expecting the highest standards of security and privacy, and we’re so excited to bring Apple Pay to users in India today,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “Apple Pay makes everyday payments with a card easy, secure, and private — from simply tapping to pay in stores without an extra app, PIN, or OTP to checking out online without repeatedly entering payment information.”
