Belgian banks Argenta, Bank Van Breda, Beobank, Crelan, and vdk bank have joined the European Payments Initiative (EPI) as they prepare to roll out its digital wallet and instant account-to-account (A2A) payment solution Wero across their platforms.
The EPI is backed by 16 major European banks and payment service providers, aiming to deliver a unified digital wallet for European consumers.
The move strengthens the organisation’s footprint in Belgium and further expands its national coverage.
Once it is deployed, the banks’ customers will be able to access Wero services directly within their banking apps, enabling instant account-to-account payments without managing multiple payment providers or complex technologies.
The banks stated that they will be able to offer the new payment solution to their customers from the beginning of 2026.
Sander Blommaert, chief retail officer at Argenta, emphasised how well EPI's solutions fits in with the bank's vision to boost simplicity in payment transactions.
“Wero will enable us to serve our customers even better with an accessible payment tool - it is a significant step forward in our ambition to bring proximity and technology together in a smart way,” he added.
Bank Van Breda’s chief executive Dirk Wouters said Wero’s integration will provide a faster and more intuitive way to manage payments.
“Our decision to offer Wero as a standalone app reflects our commitment to flexibility and customer-centric innovation, ensuring our clients can access seamless payment experiences on their own terms,” he added.
Last month, FinTech Revolut signed an agreement to join the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to promote the creation of a European sovereign payments system.
As part of this membership, Revolut customers, initially in France, Belgium and Germany, will have access to Wero's core functions directly within their Revolut app, including instant and free money transfers using Wero's platform.
In June, Berlin based payment platform Unzer also joined the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to help small and medium sized German businesses access EPI’s Wero.
The partnership integrates Wero directly into Unzer’s platform, UnzerOne, allowing businesses to accept Wero across all sales channels.
