Klarna launches in Romania

The Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) service Klarna has launched in Romania.

Customers will be able to use Klarna’s App along with its services at integrated retail partners, the Swedish FinTech said. Customers will also be able to use the “Pay in 3” service at checkout, which allows customers to split their payments into three interest-free payments.

Brands operating in Romania on the Klarna platform include Tommy Hilfiger, BSB Fashion, Zoot and Footshop. Additional brands will join the service in the coming months, the company said.

Klarna said that according to its research 45 per cent of Romanians prefer to use BNPL when making expensive purchases. The company added that around 85 per cent of Romanians are internet users who make an online purchase at least once a month.

“We have been looking into the Romanian market for quite some time,” said Lukasz Dwulit, head of Klarna Romania.

“Now, with the incredible developments in e-commerce and overall online shopping habits, the time has come for us to reach out and provide our platform to the small and big businesses that want to increase their customers’ brand loyalty while providing them with a frictionless shopping experience.”

Last month, Klarna said it had “more than halved” its operating losses in the first quarter of 2023 compared with the first financial quarter of 2022. Its loss ratio improved by 78 per cent on an adjusted basis with the result putting it “firmly on track” to reach monthly profitability in the second half of the year.
