Klarna partners with Marqeta to roll out debit card across Europe

Klarna is rolling out its debit card across 15 new European markets through the expansion of its partnership with card issuing platform Marqeta.

Through the collaboration, Klarna will utilise Marqeta’s platform to accelerate the time-to-market and scale efficiency across Europe.

Klarna first announced that it was expanded its debit-first card to users across Europe in September.

The introduction of the card in Europe follows a successful US launch in July, where 685,000 Americans signed up within two months.

The Klarna Card, powered by Visa Flexible Credential, is debit by default, enabling users to pay instantly with their own funds at more than 150 million Visa merchant locations worldwide, both in-store and online.

Customers can also choose between paying now or later, all through a single debit card experience.

“At Klarna, we believe everyday spending should be simple, flexible, and fair,” said David Sandström, chief marketing officer at Klarna. “Together with Marqeta and Visa, we’re redefining how people pay across Europe, combining the simplicity of debit with the power of pay-later options in one seamless experience.

“The Klarna Card gives consumers a smarter, more transparent way to manage their money, on their terms.”

The collaboration expands on an existing partnership between the two companies.
In July 2024, Marqeta became the first issuer processor in the US certified for Visa Flexible Credential.

The Klarna Card is currently rolling out in the UK, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Poland, and is already available in Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the US.
