Mastercard launches multi-money platform following BVNK acquisition

Mastercard has launched a new platform combining traditional payment infrastructure with stablecoin capabilities, allowing financial institutions and businesses to manage fiat currencies and digital assets through a single API.

The new Mastercard Global Money Platform was developed following the payment card provider’s acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure provider BVNK for $1.8 billion in August. It allows customers to embed multi-currency accounts, real-time currency conversion, stablecoin-linked payment cards and cross-border payout services into their own applications.

The platform is designed to support businesses operating across multiple currencies by allowing fiat currencies and stablecoins to be held within the same account and converted through a single integration. Organisations can also use the platform to manage treasury, payments and settlement operations.

Mastercard said the modular platform allows customers to adopt individual capabilities as required, reducing the need to integrate multiple providers for different payment and money management services.

Payments company Nuvei and card issuing platform Marqeta are among the first organisations to adopt the platform, alongside Ontop, Bolt Group and Almond FinTech.

The platform also incorporates Mastercard Move, the company's cross-border money movement service, enabling businesses to use stablecoin balances to make local currency payments directly into bank accounts. Mastercard said the service is expected to support more than 40 currencies across over 200 countries and territories by 2027.

Users will also be able to spend stablecoin balances through Mastercard's global merchant acceptance network, with card issuing available in more than 130 countries.

Raj Dhamodharan, executive vice president of blockchain and digital assets at Mastercard, said: “We believe the future of commerce will be built on interoperability across multiple forms of money. Global Money Platform brings together Mastercard's trusted payment infrastructure and reach with BVNK's stablecoin capabilities, giving businesses a single foundation to move value across traditional and digital ecosystems.

“This is an important step in bringing our multi-money strategy to life and enabling the next generation of programmable and agentic commerce.”
