Mastercard facing antitrust investigation over US debit programme

Mastercard has revealed in a regulatory filing that the US Justice Department’s (DoJ) antitrust division is undertaking an investigation into potential violations of federal antitrust law with its US debit programme.

Without further elaboration, the payments provider said that the DoJ’s Civil Investigative Demand had requested documents and information relating to the potential violations of sections one or two of the Sherman Act.

The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 is a law which prescribes the rule of free competition among those engaged in commerce.

Mastercard said it was fully cooperating with the DoJ’s probe which is focused on the debit programme’s competition with other payment networks and technologies.
