Triodos Bank quits X over ‘racism and lack of moderation’

Triodos Bank has said it is no longer active on X because of the platform’s “racism” and “lack of moderation”.

The bank, which was named as one of just three new 'eco providers' by Which? last year, said that it has already ended paid advertising on X and will no longer use the channel for providing information or customer service.

While Triodos – which describes itself as one of the most sustainable banks in the world – will no longer be active on the platform, it is keeping its account open to "protect its trademark" and prevent others from opening an account using its name.

The move comes after several companies, including Disney, Apple, and IBM, pulled ads from X over antisemitic posts last year.

The company has also been accused of failing to remove extreme hate speech from the platform by the Center for Countering Digital Hate.

“We advocate for a society where respect for eachother and the environment is fundamental,” Triodos wrote in a statement on X, formerly Twitter. “In our view, current developments at X are no longer reconcilable with this.

“Due to hatred, racism, and the lack of moderation, we no longer feel at home on X.”

The Netherlands-based bank, which currently has 744,500 customers, is also active in the UK, Germany, Belgium, and Spain.

Last year Triodos earned its title as an eco provider by Which? after the organisation found that the bank refuses to lend or invest in fossil fuel projects and instead focuses its lending on renewable energy.

Triodos excludes companies that mine coal, build coal plants, produce energy from fossil fuel power plants, or extract and produce oil and gas.
