Digital IDs from Lloyds and Yoti accepted under PASS scheme

Digital IDs from Lloyds Bank, FinTech Yoti and the Post Office are now accredited by the UK’s national Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS).

Yoti ID, Post Office EasyID and Lloyds Bank Smart ID can be used for both proof of age and proof of identity. Yoti said the move gives UK businesses selling age-restricted good such as energy drinks and lottery tickets confidence that these IDs are genuine and customers have been properly verified.

These digital IDs allow people to share specific information with businesses who request it without having to show physical identity documents or share a large amount of personal data.

Last year, Lloyds Bank partnered with Yoti to release Lloyds Bank Smart ID, which offers users a secure way to prove their age or identity using their phone. The announcement followed a £10 million investment by Lloyds Banking Group into the digital identity technology company earlier this year.

Each Digital ID app includes the approved PASS hologram, removing the need to carry around a physical form of identification.

Yoti said the accreditation will remove pressure on retail staff to accurately assess and challenge the age of customers, which has become harder with the quality and availability of fake IDs increasing.

Additionally, the ID apps are also government certified for right to work, right to rent and criminal record checks.

“More UK businesses can now accept our digital IDs to reduce the risk of fake IDs, increase compliance and improve the customer experience,” said Robin Tombs, chief executive of Yoti. “In the UK, over four million people have already downloaded a digital ID app.

“This is a strong sign that people are ready to embrace reusable digital IDs and want a more secure, private and convenient way to prove who they are.”
