The European Investment Bank (EIB) was this week hit by a cyber attack which it said impacted the availability of some of its websites.
The incident, which impacted eib.org and eif.org, took place several days after Russian-speaking hackers from the group Killnet said they would carry out cyber attacks against Western financial organisations over their support of Ukraine during the ongoing war, according to a report by The Telegraph.
The Russian invasion has seen cyber warfare deployed across several countries in a bid to disrupt activity and infrastructure.
In a post published on instant messaging service Telegram, the pro-Russia hacker gang – which is known for its distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks – said that they would “rebuff the madmen according to the formula ‘no money – no weapons – no Kyiv regime’.”
However, the EIB said that while the bank has seen groups claiming responsibility for the incident it would “not speculate at this stage”.
"Our IT security teams are responding to the incident with appropriate measures," said an EIB spokesperson, adding that it would not be disclosing any further details for now.
