Google enables debit card on smart watch for kids

Google has partnered with Greenlight, a FinTech which provides debit cards for children, to put a virtual debit card onto its smart watch designed for children.

As a result of the partnership, children in the US will be able to spend money without the need for a physical card or phone. Greenlight said the service will give parents peace of mind that their children have safe and easy access to money.

Additionally, parents can send money to their children, automate payments and set spending controls through the app.

The service is only available on the Google Fitbit Ace LTE smartwatch which is designed for children. The watch includes features such as interactive games, location sharing, and rewards for staying active.

Greenlight currently has around 6.5 million users in the US who use a physical debit card or a banking app that is designed to help children learn about money and financial responsibility.

“At Greenlight, we’re always looking for new ways to help parents raise financially smart kids and teach them healthy financial habits,” said Tim Sheehan, co-founder and chief executive at Greenlight. “Teaming up with Google to integrate Greenlight into kids' smartwatches allows us to bring families even more peace of mind and convenience as their kids become more independent.”
