House purchases delayed by payments glitch at Bank of England

The Bank of England has announced that a global payments issue is impacting its CHAPs service.

The central bank explained that the issue is impacting some high value and time-sensitive payments, including house purchases.

CHAPS is a sterling same-day system that is used to settle high-value wholesale payments as well as time-critical, lower-value payments like buying or paying a deposit on a property.

The Bank said that it is working closely with a third-party supplier, industry, and other authorities to resolve the issue as “promptly as possible”.

Retail payments systems have been unaffected by the issue, which means that cash points, card payments, and bank transfers are working as usual.

“If you are concerned about a CHAPS payment you plan to make or receive today, please contact your bank, or other payment service provider,” wrote the Bank in a statement.
