WhatsApp launches in-app payment service in India

WhatsApp users in India can now make payments directly through the messaging app.

In a blog post, WhatsApp parent company Meta announced that people can add items to their cart and send payments using a variety of UPI apps and credit and debit cards.

The social media firm has partnered with Razorpay and PayU to enable users to make payments through its app. Companies will not be charged for the in-app payments.

The company added that it was also introducing new services on WhatsApp to allow businesses to “build relationships and get more done.”

A new service called Flows enables businesses to allow customers to carry out tasks such as booking train seats or ordering meals through WhatsApp.

Businesses will also be able to become Meta Verified, which will allow customers to check they are chatting with the legitimate firms and avoid scams. Businesses will also be able to create a custom WhatsApp page, which can be discovered via a web search.

Earlier this year, TSB urged Meta to to clampdown on fraud originating on its platforms. In an open letter to the company, TSB chief executive officer Robin Bulloch wrote that scams originating from Meta platforms account for 80 per cent of the fraud it refunds within its three biggest fraud categories.
